“If a hearing reduction is brought to one’s attention or if an accident happens, do not delay getting your hearing tested.”

How and when did you first realize you were experiencing hearing loss?

I escorted Naval Sea Cadet Corps to an exchange in Canada, the cadets were manning two 1890s canons. After the practice, I saw that one field gun was fired, but not the other. When I rounded the tents, the canon fired a salute round about 10-12 paces directly at me.

I saw the base medic when the accident occurred, followed by a doctor in town the next day. After the exam the doctor recommended that I see an Audiologist upon returning to the U.S., which I did and was diagnosed with Sudden Hearing Loss.

Where did you first go for information or help? Why?

I went to South Bay Hearing to have my hearing tested after returning to the U.S. after the accident with the canon discharge. Dr. McBride recommended the ReSound LiNX 3D for both ears.

Based on your experience, do you have suggestions for others on how and where to start? Any other important things for them to consider?

If a hearing reduction is brought to one’s attention or if an accident happens, do not delay getting your hearing tested by an Audiologist, series of tests can determine the amount of hearing loss and they can recommend a solution that best matches one’s needs.

What was your biggest concern about hearing aids? Did that turn out to be true?

My biggest concern was that I wouldn’t be able to hear as well as before the accident. My hearing aids have corrected the distortion I hear in my left ear, and increased the level in my right. No hearing aid can replace one’s ears, they can only help. As they did with me.

How have hearing aids changed your life? Were there any unexpected or surprising benefits?

Hearing aids have greatly helped me gain back most of my hearing. The biggest problem I had was in loud environments (Restaurants, conferences, etc.) it was extremely difficult to make out who was talking. Getting the Multi Mic has greatly improved by ability to hear people at the same table while at a restaurant or Sports Bar – the Multi Mic is fantastic!

Has improved hearing inspired you to pursue new activities or causes? Or continue doing things you enjoy?

Hearing Aids have allowed me to continue in my duties helping to train young adults ages 10-18 in all aspects of seamanship, science & math. Our cadets have gone on to colleges, service academies or enlisted in the Army, Navy, Marines & Coast Guard.

What would you tell someone who is considering hearing aids?

Don’t wait to have your hearing tested. Get help to restore your hearing so that you can continue to do the things you enjoy.
