“I suggest starting by getting referrals from people that have hearing aids. Confidence in your audiologist, is of prime importance.”

How and when did you first realize you were experiencing hearing loss?

I could not hear my grandchildren clearly and some of the dialogue on television was hard to hear. Particularly with my grandchildren, it frustrated our relationship to a degree.

Where did you first go for information or help? Why?

I went to Jane Webb from Eastside ENT Specialists, she is a member of my church and other members had consulted her about hearing.

Based on your experience, do you have suggestions for others on how and where to start? Any other important things for them to consider?

I suggest starting by getting referrals from people that have hearing aids. Confidence in your audiologist, is of prime importance.

What was your biggest concern about hearing aids? Did that turn out to be true?

I really had no concerns other than I hoped that the devices would improve my ability to hear my grandchildren.

How have hearing aids changed your life? How do they help you at your job, in your hobbies or at volunteer activities?

Yes, they improved my life. Many times, I get up in the morning before my wife. When she gets up I can now hear her stirring in the bedroom from the kitchen and have her coffee ready for her. An unexpected benefit was the streaming. I can listen to audio books and watch and listen to YouTube without disturbing other people around me. This is great when I am at lunch alone in a restaurant. I watch and listen to my iPad or iPhone.

Has improved hearing inspired you to pursue new activities or causes? Or continue doing things you enjoy?

No new activities but in the morning when I read my Bible (YouBible app) I also listen to it without disturbing others, this gives me a double sensory experience.

What would you tell someone who is considering hearing aids?

Do it, it allows you to hear things that you haven’t heard in a long time. I sleep better. When I take them out for the night, I really notice the difference, I hear less and that compliments the enhanced hearing I have during the daytime.
