“Having my hearing so clear and crisp has changed my life.”
How and when did you first realize you were experiencing hearing loss? What problems was that causing in your day-to-day life? Did you hesitate to seek care? Why or why not?
I am a hair colorist at a busy salon in Manhattan, and after struggling to hear my clients talking to me with so much background noise, I started to think that I might have some hearing loss. But when my Apple watch started to warn and notify me of the dangerous decibels I was being exposed to every time I picked up my blow dryer, I figured it was time to have my ears checked. After a very cool client of mine finished her appointment by “putting her ears in”… I didn’t hesitate to ask her about her experience with them, and found myself at the doctor’s office a week later.
Based on your experience, do you have suggestions for others on how and where to start? Any other important things for them to consider?
Just make an appointment with a hearing professional! Everything was easy and confirmed what I suspected. Having my hearing so clear and crisp has changed my life. Also – after learning that undiagnosed hearing loss can be a precursor to Dementia, I’m so glad I caught it when I did. Music sounds better, I hear the birds singing, and I can talk clearly hands, and earbuds free, on the phone!
What was your biggest concern about hearing aids? Did that turn out to be true? How have hearing aids changed your life?
I was worried that they would be annoying and bulky, and that you could see them. There’s a stigma that comes with hearing aids and it could not be further from the truth. They are virtually invisible. I feel superhuman with them in.
What would you tell someone who is considering hearing aids?
Don’t wait! Hearing is such a big part of life, and after wearing them I realized how much I was missing and had no idea. As a very social person, it felt like a veil had been lifted and I could experience life in a brand new, clearer, brighter way.
